Lazy hazy days
Is there any greater luxury in the world than being your own boss? I think not.
We've been having amazing weather lately - sunny and calm and warm [well. for Iceland - highs of around 18] and even with a hint of humidity - something that does not happen often here near the Arctic circle. There's a misty haze over everything that is a bit of a pain because it blocks the full force of the sun; on the bright side, though, it makes for amazing sunsets.
So today I packed up a couple of assignments that I needed to read over before I start translating them, got on my bike and cycled out to the amazing Seltjarnarnes peninsula [that I keep banging on about - you know, the one with the lighthouse]. It's actually a bird sanctuary and right now the migrating birds are in the process of landing* so you can believe there's a lot of wild and crazy action out there. I sat there in the midst of chirping birds full-on trying to seduce each other [the ones that weren't flocked together at the edge of the sea looking totally exhausted, that is, having just flown in] and did my work and contemplated how good I have it.** I mean, spring, birds, freedom, sun... what more can you want?
Incidentally, I was shocked when I learned how long it takes one whooper swan to fly from Scotland to Iceland. Anybody know? Care to guess? - And no googling!
MEANWHILE, SPEAKING OF ASSIGNMENTS...
Starting tomorrow morning and for the next two weeks, I'm going to be a guest blogger here.
OK, maybe not exactly a guest blogger. More like editing and writing the news items while somebody's on holiday. Meaning I've graduated from the weather to the news and am getting paid for it. D'you reckon that constitutes a promotion?
Not that I'll be giving up my weather post in the meantime or anything... it will probably take me all of, oh... half an hour a day, so you will still find me here.
Currently it's 15°C and the sun is shining brightly. Daybreak this morning was at 03.11 and nightfall is set for 23.42.
* Happily the Chief Veterinarian claims that it is very unlikely that bird flu cases will be found from here on in, as most migrating birds have already arrived.
** I have it good while I have assignments coming in at a steady rate - as soon as they grind to a halt I tend to bemoan my freelance state...
