Watch and weep

Well, Silvía Nótt is not to be undone and now daily reports of her antics in Athens reach these shores and let me just say it’s pretty hard not to crack up. She started with a bang by swearing onstage during rehearsals and offending the Greeks bigtime, then started pulling stunts like handing her cigarette butts to various Eurovision staff and asking them to put them out for her. That, too, went over like a lead balloon.

Finally someone saw cause to have a word with the Icelandic delegation about Silvía’s behavior, after which she showed up at a press conference all humble and modest and read out a statement about the ‘evil people’ who wanted to sabotage her chances in the competition. As in, ‘You know who you are’. In the middle of the press conference she stopped in the middle of a sentence, pointed to a female journalist in the crowd and declared: ‘You looked me in the eye!’ She then ordered her staff to remove the offending onlooker, which they promptly did amidst kicking legs and flailing arms.*

The next day she held a press conference that was attended by more people than any other in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest [!]. There she was on her best behaviour [which for Silvía isn’t saying a lot] and clearly managed to win over a few skeptics. Say what you will about old Silvía, she’s a bullshitter extraordinaire and can think on her feet faster than just about anybody I’ve ever seen, except for maybe Ali G. or Dame Edna Everage. It’s pretty hilarious.

She was asked a lot about the Finnish contestants – you know, these guys – to which she replied that she was in awe of their makeup... ‘I mean, I met them yesterday... you know, without makeup... and they were really ugly.’ The next day, after the press conference, she apparently met up with them in front of the press and burst into tears, declaring, ‘This is the first time in the history of the world that the most beautiful woman in the world actually meets the ugliest men.’ To soften the sting, though, she told the lead singer that he had ‘... a beautiful soul.’

These escapades have not gone unnoticed by the Greek media and apparently no other contestant has received as much attention, save for the Greek contestant. It’s pretty much guaranteed that she won’t win – or even make the finals – but in the meantime she’s keeping a lot of people entertained. Not to mention drumming up loads of publicity for herself. Say what you will about her behavior, it takes a certain amount of genius to generate this much buzz.

MEANWHILE, WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR SUMMER?
Last weekend we had incredible weather – spent hours on both Saturday and Sunday flaked out on the deck at the cottage, soaking up the rays. Incidentally, Icelanders have a very clever way to combat chilly temps when the sun shines – those ubiquitous hot tubs. Just fill with water as hot as you can stand it, soak in there for a while, then retire to sunbathe somewhere where you are sheltered from the wind, and it’s like the tropics. Today started off all gorgeous and sunny, but clouded over during the course of the day and is now completely overcast. Which is good for those of us who have a bunch of deadlines to contend with. Current temps are 9°C, daybreak was at 02.24, and nightfall tonight is at 24.32.

*Obviously it was staged.
